James Voorhies

Director of Development

James Voorhies is an art historian, curator, and nonprofit administrator whose career spans museums, universities, and cultural nonprofits. His work sits at the intersection of curatorial production, strategy, and fundraising, directing programs that advance missions while building long-term philanthropic support.


James has held senior leadership roles encompassing strategic planning and organizational governance. He served as Curator-at-Large at the Bass Museum of Art, where he curated major commissions and worked with Development to strengthen donor support. Previously, as Executive Director of the Tony Smith Foundation in New York, he oversaw the Tony Smith Catalogue Raisonné, published by The MIT Press, and led initiatives supported through partnerships. He was the inaugural John R. and Barbara Robinson Family Director of the Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts at Harvard University, where he organized programs aligned with the university’s academic priorities.


Grounding this work is James’s practice as an art historian and educator. His research focuses on the institutional conditions that shape artistic and cultural production. He holds a PhD in Modern and Contemporary Art History from the Ohio State University and has taught at Harvard University, California College of the Arts, and Bennington College.
